American tennis star, Serena William has been named the highest-paid sportswoman in the world according to Forbes, thereby ending an 11-year streak of Russian sensation, Maria Sharapova, as the world’s highest-paid female athlete.
Williams, who lost to Garbine Muguruza in the French Open final last weekend, banked $28.9 million over the past 12 months.
She has dominated female tennis for more than a decade, but Sharapova was adjudged to be the biggest earner, thanks to her endorsements with Nike, American Express, Porsche and TAG Heuer.
The Russian earned $21.9 million over the past 12 months, down almost $8 million from the previous year.
American mixed martial arts star, Ronda Rousey, is third on the list with an income of $14 million, just ahead of NASCAR stock car driver Danica Patrick, who earned $13.9 million.
