Arsenal fans were given something of a fright on Wednesday morning after the launch of the club’s eagerly awaited new home kit showed that the Gunners were selling number 7 shirts ahead of next season bearing the name of Danny Welbeck.
The seven jersey, of course, has belonged to Alexis Sanchez since last summer. But with the Chilean still not having signed a new contract, talk of him leaving the club has been gradually increasing in recent weeks and months.
On Arsenal’s official store Welbeck’s number is 7. Does this mean Sanchez is leaving?? 🤔🙌 pic.twitter.com/32AGjeyUG8

So of course, when people saw ‘Welbeck 7’ shirts for sale on the club’s official online store shortly after the new kit went live, it was interpreted as a major hint that Sanchez is on his way.

However, in reality it appears to have been an unfortunate mistake that has since been rectified. Welbeck is now listed alongside his usual 23 number, with number seven shirts bearing the name of ‘Alexis’ also available as normal. Phew.
t is not the first time this summer that a mistake regarding Sanchez has given Arsenal fans cause for concern after he was accidentally listed as a Bayern Munich player when Chile announced their squad for the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.
Whether he remains an Arsenal player beyond the summer is still yet to be seen.
